How do I decide what I want to do?

In the career center, I often get requests from parents to have their students take a personality test to figure out what they want to do in the future.

In our district, our students take the following interest assessments (their results are housed in their RUReadyND account:)

Mini Career Clusters Assessment in 6th grade

Multiple Intelligence Survey in 7th grade

Career Cluster Survey in 8th grade

Interest Profiler in 9th grade

Career Key in 10th grade

To access these results:

Account Name:  nd.lastname.firstname.mmddyyyy (birthdate)

Password: your student ID#

In the past, I have used an additional assessment when parents have requested it:  www.tinyurl.com/personality4. The results are tied to a Myers-Briggs Type Indicator score. The careers listed in the results are not fantastic, but I have students take their 4-letter score google it to find out more. For example, enter ISTJ careers in google. Once they have their 4-letter score, they can find a lot more careers that match their personality type on other sites.

Most of the time it’s not really taking another assessment that will help a student make decisions about their future. It’s more going through the results and me (or their counselor) picking their brain to see if they are still interested in those same careers, or if their interests have changed. Then we work to put together a list of 2-3 (or 10) careers that they might be interested in, and then I send them out on job shadows of those careers – so they can experience the environment and talk with professionals in those careers to see if it might be a good fit for the student.

All this magic happens in the career center :) The answer to your question, “How do I decide what I want to do?” Stop in the career center!
